てきとう【適当】

～な 1 〔条件に合う〕 suitable; proper; appropriate; fit; right; suited to…; good 《for…》; adequate; apt; apposite; seemly; qualified [competent] 《to do, for sth》.

～する ＝てきする¹.

●小学校低学年の子供にちょうど適当な本 a book just right for lower-grade[-level] elementary-school children

・適当な家 a suitable house

・適当な例 an appropriate [a good, a well-chosen] example; a case in point

・最も適当な人物である be the best [right] person for 《the job》; be the person best qualified for 《the position》

・他に適当な言葉を思いつかないので, その時の彼の行為は「異常であった」とだけ言っておこう. For lack [want] of a better expression, I will only call his behavior at the time “unusual.”

・どうも適当な助手がいない. I can't find an assistant who will do.

●適当な条件で on fair terms

・適当な時を見計らって at the right [a good] time; at the proper moment; opportunely

・ジャガイモを適当な大きさに切る cut [slice] potatoes into the desired size

・適当な場所を選んで休憩しよう. Let's find a good place to rest [take a rest].

・今日は適当なところで仕事を切り上げて早く帰ってきた. Today I quit [left off] work as soon as it was convenient and came home early.

3 〔いい加減な〕

●適当なことを言ってごまかす evade [skirt] the issue 《by saying…》; equivocate

・適当なことを言うな. Be [Get] serious.

・適当な口実を設ける give 《one's illness》 as an excuse 《for…》; offer an excuse that sounds plausible.

適当さ 〔いい加減さ〕 lack of seriousness.

適当に 1 〔程よい程度に〕 suitably; adequately; appropriately; properly; reasonably.

●君の考えで適当に計らってくれ. Please take care of [deal with] it as you think fit. | I leave it to your discretion.

・過労にならないよう適当にやりなさい. Take it easy and don't let yourself work too hard.

・このドッグフードにはカルシウムが適当に配合してある. This dog food contains the right amount of calcium your pet needs.

2 〔いい加減に〕

●(試合で)適当にあしらう take it easy on sb

・適当に相づちを打っていたら賛成したことになってしまった. My unthinking use of the customary yeses and uh-huhs as he was explaining [talking]was taken to mean that I approved.

・アンケート用紙には適当に書いておけばいいんだよ. Just put down whatever you think fit [want] on the questionnaire.
